Goblin Town is Built!

When I started this site, I actually envisioned it more as a WIP blog where I shared painting techniques and hobby progress.  I didn’t have enough freetime to maintain it however so that is why the site dropped off in terms of updates, I am starting that side of things back up now because I have two Goblin Town Scenarios left to play and then I will have painting and terrain projects that need to be completed before I can play scenarios in the Hobbit hardback book.  This way I can keep content coming to all of you and I enjoy sharing my hobby with the world as well 🙂

So I bought Escape From Goblin Town a little over a year ago and I recently finished painting it up.  I took some pictures that I think are among the best I’ve done and to be honest, they blew me away with their quality.  I learned a lot from painting this set including how to do skin tones well.  I experimented with some new colors (Rakarth Flesh and purple glazing is a great combo!) and the Goblin King was the first big model I had painted at the time.  I’m really proud of the picture below as a result.

The other thing I learned is the importance of variety when painting.  I initially painted this box set and nothing else and I got tired of painting goblins since there were 36 regular goblins to paint.  Mixing in dwarves wasn’t enough so eventually I painted non-LOTR things to try and push my painting skills.  This slowed me down but it kept me from getting burnt out.  I would recommend having a mix of models to paint at any given time so that whenever you get bored of doing something, you have other models to fall back on.  I could have gotten these done quicker had I not done that but I wouldn’t have enjoyed it as much.  It was really nice when I was having trouble or getting frustrated on a project to be able to go back to something familiar like these goblins and know that I could paint them well.

Lastly, I thought I’d show off the dwarves I’ve painted which were all completed in 2018.  These guys really helped push my skills and made me a better and more confident painter.  Most importantly, these guys are fun to paint and a great way to learn some basic freehand techniques.  One of the reasons why I would recommend Escape From Goblin Town as a way to get into this hobby is that it is a lot of fun to paint if you have interest in the Hobbit.  The box set is probably getting harder to find online but all of the components can be bought individually so you can always grab the books in the box off eBay and then pick up the individual components that way.  I’ll leave you with the rest of the dwarves.  I hope this article was enjoyable to read and expect to see more hobby articles in the nearish future!
